As more states ban access to abortion and attempt to prevent citizens from getting abortions in other states, the controversial battle continues.

Many patients that want abortions are flocking to Democratic states that still allow them. Texans often flee to the nearby state of New Mexico. New Mexico remains a popular state for anyone to get an abortion. Now, New Mexico has passed a new bill regarding abortions.

The Governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, signed a bill that protects abortion providers. The bill protects them from prosecution, disciplinary action, and extradition to other states.

Fox News reports, “A companion abortion-rights bill signed in March guarantees access to reproductive health care in response to a string of anti-abortion ordinances by cities and counties in eastern New Mexico where opposition to abortion access runs deep.”

The new bill addresses gender-affirming care as well. While almost a dozen states have banned gender-affirming care in minors or have passed a bill that does something similar, states like New Mexico are passing bills that go in the opposite direction. The bill protects medical providers for this type of care, regardless of the patient’s age.

Gender-affirming care in New Mexico has a very broad definition. It is any type of gender-affirming care, including surgical, psychological, pharmaceutical, behavioral, and other medical treatment. Surgeons are allowed to perform gender-affirming procedures without fear of legal repercussions. The surgeons and medical staff that approved the surgery are protected under New Mexico law.

Both sides are weighing in on the new legislation. According to krqe.com, “‘With the signing of Senate Bill 13, in addition to multiple other bills recently signed, we are proud to live in the safest and most affirming state in the nation for LGBTQ people,’ Marshall Martinez, the executive director of Equality New Mexico, said in a press release.” However, while those against the bill say that it is destroying the moral fabric of the state, advocates are pleased with the new laws.
