On Monday, a 32-year-old Portland man, identified as David Read Haywood Everding, was apprehended after allegedly vandalizing a downtown business using a rock and later taking a hostage, according to a report by The Post Millennial.

Portland Police stated that Everding fled the crime scene and was later discovered in a different area downtown.

He entered an office building near Southwest 5th Avenue and Southwest Oak Street, where he seized a security guard as a hostage, according to the police.

The police statement elaborated that Everding used the security guard as a shield to avoid arrest. The hostage was subsequently released unharmed before the suspect was taken into custody. Everding has been charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree kidnapping, coercion, and first-degree criminal mischief, as well as resisting arrest, harassment, and escape. However, the district attorney's office, led by Mike Schmidt, dropped the resisting arrest charge on April 4, one day after the incident.

A Post Millennial report concluded that Everding, a University of Oregon alumnus, is known for participating in leftist protests, including the June 2018 occupation of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office by far-left extremists and Antifa. During the 38-day standoff, federal employees were forced to evacuate while Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and the city's police refused to provide law enforcement assistance to the besieged office. Everding's social media presence reveals connections to progressive former Oregon Governor Kate Brown and far-left ex-Portland city councilwoman Jo Ann Hardesty, who was voted out of office in November.

Hardesty gained notoriety for defending the deadly 2020 BLM-Antifa riots in Portland and attributing the violence and arson attacks to white supremacists and the Portland Police. She later retracted her accusations against the police when pressed for evidence. Former Governor Brown propagated unfounded claims of "secret police" abducting peaceful protesters during the riots, and both the city of Portland and the state of Oregon declined to cooperate with federal law enforcement as rioters attempted to set fire to the Mark O. Hatfield US federal courthouse in July 2020.

Everding's LinkedIn profile lists his most recent employment as a business systems analyst for Nike, but this information could not be independently verified. He has been arrested multiple times for various violent offenses in Portland. In September 2019, he was charged with fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest, and interfering with an officer. He was convicted of the latter charge, while the other two charges were dismissed. In March 2020, he was charged with second-degree criminal trespass, but the case was dropped. Weeks before Monday's hostage incident, Everding was charged with felony first-degree criminal mischief and fourth-degree assault in an ongoing case.

Everding has not entered any pleas and remains in custody as of the day after the incident. He has been assigned a court-appointed defense attorney, and a report arguing for his release from jail has been submitted to the court.
