The veto was overturned by both houses of the Kansas state legislature, each with a Republican supermajority, after a lopsided 84-40 vote in the Kansas House.
Following the vote, Democratic Rep. Susan Ruiz made a vulgar comment on the House floor towards her Republican colleagues, who allegedly laughed after the vote and told them they were "full of s---." Ruiz accused one of her GOP colleagues of "gloating" when he came into the chamber.

The report also noted that Democratic Rep. Heather Meyer, who has a transgender child, wore a shirt in the chamber that read "protect trans youth."

The state House initially passed the bill on February 23 with one Democrat joining all the Republicans in support. The Senate later passed it before being vetoed by Kelly on March 17.
This marks the third consecutive year Kelly has vetoed a ban on transgender students from participating in girls' sports.

Kelly expressed disappointment in the override, saying that it was a tough vote for some legislators who may regret their decision in the future. She also called it a "moral values vote" and suggested that legislators may have voted against their own values.
