According to the Washington Post, Hunter has sold around 12 paintings for less than his asking price of $500,000. The amount of money Hunter has made from these sales remains unclear, but estimates suggest he has earned significantly more than the average American artist.

The anonymous art sales have raised concerns about who might be buying Hunter's art and why. In November 2020, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer expressed concerns that the sold artwork had found its way to China, potentially putting President Joe Biden's safety and the confidentiality of government information at risk.

As a result, Comer has demanded Georges Bergès, Hunter's art dealer with ties to the Chinese art market, cooperate with his investigations into the propriety of such sales. So far Bergès shut down such requests.
House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan has also raised questions about Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's handling of Hunter's shady art deals. Considering the manifold corruption that has been a scourge on the art industry, with certain quarters of the trade serving as a platform for money laundering, scrutiny of these deals is warranted.

Despite these concerns, the White House and Hunter have remained unyielding in their support of anonymous sales to buyers who remain anonymous.
Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki defended the degree of transparency exhibited in Hunter's art sales experience, saying that "We were very transparent about what recommendations were made to the gallerist." When asked about supporters' response to the controversies surrounding his art dealings, the President's son defiantly responded, “f*ck’em”.
