Roy McGrath, the ex-chief of staff of former two-term Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, who had been sought by the FBI and federal officials for weeks, is dead after a standoff with police.

According to his attorney, Joseph Murtha, McGrath succumbed to gunshot injuries after a standoff with the police on Monday night. Though the FBI fired at least one weapon during the standoff, officials have yet to ascertain whether injuries were self-inflicted.

McGrath had been wanted for failing to appear for his federal trial in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 13, and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland issued an arrest warrant against him. On March 23rd the FBI stated, "The FBI is seeking the public’s assistance in locating fugitive Roy C. McGrath, age 53, of Naples, Florida, McGrath is now a fugitive and considered an international flight risk.”

The FBI received a tip regarding McGrath's location in Knoxville, Tennessee, and confronted him, leading to the standoff. The FBI also released a statement requesting the public's help locating McGrath.

In a statement to Fox News the FBI said, "The FBI is reviewing an agent-involved shooting which occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023. The subject, Roy McGrath, sustained injury during the arrest and was transported to the hospital. The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division."

Despite pledging not guilty to his charges during his October 2021 court appearance and being released on pre-trial terms, McGrath had also been charged with violations of 18 USC 1343 (wire fraud) and 18 USC 666 (theft or bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds) and with the destruction, alteration, or falsification of records in a federal investigation.

The FBI stated that it takes all incidents involving its agents and task force members seriously and is conducting a thorough examination of the shooting. Hogan, who is a Republican, has shown support for the investigation. The situation and its outcome remain under further investigation.
