Democrat Senator Tim Kaine has a new challenger in his run for re-election to the Senate.

The Daily Caller reports that Club for Growth Vice President of Government Affairs Scott Parkinson has announced his intention to run for the Virginia Senate seat in 2024. Parkinson is the second GOP candidate to announce their intention to run.

Tim Kaine might have thought he would have a cakewalk to his third term in the Senate. He won re-election in 2018 by a 16-point margin. He was also the Governor of Virginia from 2005 to 2009. Governors in Virginia can only serve one term.

Kaine also served as the Vice-Presidential nominee for the Democrats in 2016 in a losing effort. However, Kaine is now facing some severe pressure from GOP candidates to try to unseat him.

Parkinson said the following on a video via Vimeo:

“Over the last three years, politicians like Tim Kaine and Joe Biden have ignored the middle class. Inflation has skyrocketed, parents have been locked out of classrooms, and crime rates remain at record highs.”

He also followed this up by saying:

“Tim Kaine has run for office nine times and served in office for almost 30 years. He’s enabled all these liberal policies by voting with Bernie Sanders 94% of the time.”

Parkinson has worked in a variety of governmental roles since 2006. He has worked for mainstream GOP figures such as Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio. Since 2019, Parkinson has worked at the Club for Growth organization. This has helped him build his profile and position him well for a run for political office.

According to the Daily Caller, political observers believe that the GOP primary for this seat could start to fill up with many candidates. They report that retired Navy officer Hung Cao is also considering taking a shot at winning the GOP primary. Cao ran for the House of Representatives in 2022 but lost to Democrat Jennifer Wexton by approximately 6 points.

In addition to these names, there is also speculation that Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin might want to throw his hat in the ring as well. He has not indicated where he is leaning on that question, but some believe Youngkin could have the best shot at unseating Kaine in the 2024 race.
