In a recent interview with host Jane Pauley on the TV show “Sunday Morning,” Senator John Fetterman discussed his struggle with depression.

Fetterman said, “I had stopped leaving my bed, I had stopped eating, I was dropping weight,” and “I had stopped engaging in most things that I love in my life.” He added, “My message right now isn’t political. I’m just somebody that is suffering from depression.”

This past February, Fetterman checked himself into Bethesda, Maryland’s Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The Daily Caller reports that while the senator was undergoing treatment, it was determined he was also struggling with significant hearing loss, which can affect the way the brain processes the way someone hears words.

Fetterman explained to Pauley that, for the most part, he understands what is being said, “but my hearing has a deficiency that makes it difficult for me to fully understand 100 percent of what is being said.” to assist him with hearing better, Fetterman relies on the use of captioning.

Fetterman ran for the Senate in November. Although he won, Fetterman said, “Depression can absolutely convince you that you actually lost.” He noted that winning the senate race was the beginning of his “downward spiral.”

Fetterman discussed his health experiences beginning in 2017 when he was diagnosed with a decreased heart pump. In May 2022, the senator suffered a stroke attributed to atrial fibrillation combined with a decreasing heart pump.

A few months after recovering from the stroke, the senate race followed in November. A visit to a Democratic retreat followed, where the senator says his peers were concerned about him because he didn’t eat. After experiencing feeling “lightheaded,” one day later, Fetterman opted to check himself into Walter Reed, where he would be treated for depression.

Sen. Fetterman, currently in remission for depression, told Pauley he aspired to be a good father, a good husband, and “the kind of senator that Pennsylvania deserves.”
