According to a source with ties to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Russia's President Vladimir Putin could be ousted by his own military advisors who are growing increasingly frustrated by their nation’s costly losses in Ukraine.

James Olson, a former decorated chief of counterintelligence who spent 30 years with the spy agency, described Putin as a “dead man walking” in a frank and exclusive interview with The Sun. Olson also remarked that Putin will never agree to withdrawing his forces from Ukraine until Russia has complete control over the four partially occupied regions that were unlawfully annexed in the fall. Olson said, “If Putin stays in power, there will be a long war because he will not give up — but I do not think that Putin is going to stay in power.” “I believe that he will be removed from power,” he added. “I think Putin will be taken out,” he said. “I would not rule out assassination.”

Olson, who now serves as a professor of international affairs at Texas A&M University, stated that Russia's military leaders are disillusioned with the high number of casualties in Ukraine. Were Putin's disgruntled generals to revolt against him, Olson believes that Putin would be a “dead man walking” and that he would not survive such a mutiny. The Ministry of Defense in the United Kingdom has provided updates indicating that Russia has suffered approximately 200,000 casualties in Ukraine since February 2022, including injured and slain soldiers. Ukraine's Ministry of Defense has recorded even higher numbers of “eliminated” Russian personnel, exceeding 175,000.

According to Olson, Putin's future is closely tied to the outcome of the ongoing war in Ukraine, which could ultimately lead to his downfall. Olson believes that there is a strong dissent within the military, intelligence services, and oligarchs against Putin, and it is likely that "some patriotic Russians will decide they need to eliminate Putin" to put an end to the grueling war as Putin is "bleeding Russia and he cannot do that forever."

Olson also warned that if Putin persists in clinging to power, the conflict might expand beyond Ukraine's borders and encroach upon neighboring Moldova, which is widely believed to be in Russia's crosshairs.
