Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, is expected to appear before a New York City court on Tuesday, following an indictment secured by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in connection with alleged hush payments to adult actress Stormy Daniels.

Bragg's pursuit of Trump is the first in history to charge a former President with a crime. The charges come as Bragg faces criticism for his far-left political policies, which are perceived as soft on crime amid an ongoing uptick in violent attacks since COVID-19 hit New York City in March 2020.

A Manhattan grand jury indicted Trump last week, after Bragg's office conducted a years-long investigation. The alleged hush money payments, which are central to Bragg's indictment of Trump, were also previously investigated by the Federal Election Commission and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. However, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York declined to charge Trump in connection with one of the alleged payments in 2019, even as former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen implicated him as part of his own plea deal.

Recently, Maria Danzilo, a former candidate for New York’s state Senate, was attacked by a stranger without provocation in the city's famed Central Park. She raised the concern that the District Attorney is not focused on doing his job for the No. 1 issue of keeping people safe in New York. "People are so concerned with the direction that we're going in," she added.

"If you want to stand for public safety, you have to actually provide public safety," Maria said. "And we're not doing that when you have people in broad daylight going around sucker punching people." There is a long list of other attacks that have also taken place in broad daylight across the city, with crime statistics showing felony assaults continuing to climb as of Friday. When District Attorney Alvin Bragg spends a year working on former President Trump’s indictment while many other serious crimes are apparent through the city, the people are concerned about priorities.

Trump's arraignment will be held following enhanced security preparations, assisted by the U.S. Secret Service. Bragg's office had issued a controversial "Day 1" memo calling for the office's prosecutors to seek non-prison punishments for some crimes and to reduce pre-trial incarceration where possible, with some exceptions.
