In an unexpected move, Disney invoked the name of King Charles III to thwart Governor Ron DeSantis' (R-Fla.) plans to take control of the corporate kingdom's self-governance, as reported by multiple outlets Wednesday.

Ron Peri, the former pastor, and CEO of The Gathering, who sits on the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board appointed by DeSantis, expressed his utter disappointment in the move. "This essentially makes Disney the government," he said, as reported by WKMG. The takeover occurred in February when DeSantis signed a bill to dissolve Reedy Creek Improvement District and install the CFTOB.

However, unbeknownst to DeSantis, RCID had transferred its government-like powers to Disney just "hours" before the Florida House of Representatives approved the takeover, according to Fox News Digital. The agreement that Disney signed is called a "Declaration of Restrictive Covenants," which guarantees the corporate kingdom the final say in any alterations to the property and requires the board to inform Disney of any potential changes, NPR reported.

The document used the "Rule Against Perpetuities," which stipulates that the Declaration will remain in effect until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, King of England, living as of the date of this declaration.

Peri stated that the legal maneuver has rendered the CTOFB powerless, leaving them with "little beyond the ability to maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure," WKMG reported. The spokesperson also mentioned that the board has "retained multiple financial and legal firms to conduct audits and investigate Disney's past behavior." These investigations will prove essential in understanding the full extent of Disney's power and the implications of its decision to invoke the name of King Charles III.
