The Russian Wagner mercenary group has likely lost tens of thousands of fighters in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

This has had a major impact on the ability of Russia to continue to combat Ukrainian troops throughout the country.

The Institute for the Study of War think tank released a report in which it put out these statistics as it tries to compile as much data as possible about what is going on in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. They hope to provide as much information as possible about the situation on the battlefield so that Western nations can know how to react to the evolving situation on the battlefield.

The New York Post reports that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley has stated that the Wagner group has approximately 6,000 professional personnel and another 20,000 to 30,000 recruits. Most of those recruits are convicts; it is important to consider this when looking at how these individuals are faring out on the battlefield. They may not be as well-trained as the soldiers that do this type of work all of the time.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby estimated the size of the Wagner group at approximately 50,000 back in December. He stated that much of this was due to recruiting from the prisons in Russia. It’s something that can impact Russia’s ability to continue to carry out its battles throughout Ukraine.

These recruits have spent months capturing ground in this key Ukrainian city. Many following the events closely say that these battles have become a “meat grinder” for anyone who has decided to sign up to serve in the battle.

The ISW report determined: “It is likely that the difference between Kirby’s 50,000 figure in Ukraine and Milley’s 26,000 to 36,000 figure in the Bakhmut area is the result of casualties from Wagner’s attritional offensive on Bakhmut.”

Ian Stubbs, a senior military adviser to the United Kingdom’s mission to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, indicated that 30,000 Russian troops and Wagner personnel have likely been killed or injured in the Bakhmut area since July.

The update from the ISW concluded: “Stubbs stated that Russian and Wagner forces have particularly suffered significant losses in and around Bakhmut in recent weeks and that they urgently need to replenish their personnel.”
