On the eve of Transgender Day of Visibility, President Joe Biden issued a statement affirming the value of transgender Americans to the nation’s “soul”, as well as condemning the “discriminatory” laws that forbid medical treatment for transgender youth.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who publicly identified as non-binary in 2022, echoed Biden’s remarks during a press briefing. The statement failed to mention, however, the potential long-term medical consequences of these treatments such as sterilization and giving up sexual satisfaction. Despite this omission, the President was adamant in his condemnation of the “epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls, in particular women and girls of color,” that has reportedly taken too many lives too soon.

This characterization of trans-related fatalities has been disputed, as the majority of those who died in 2022 were victims of domestic violence, sex work, or drug-related violence, rather than targeted by transphobic individuals. Biden also referred to the Club Q mass shooting in Colorado last year, neglecting to note that the perpetrator was non-binary, and he conspicuously omitted the recent mass shooting in Nashville, which occurred at a Christian school attended by the transgender shooter.

In addition to decrying the violence and discrimination faced by transgender Americans, Biden highlighted the efforts of his administration to “ease the tremendous strain that discrimination, bullying, and harassment can put on transgender children” by pushing for child sex changes and encouraging parents to “affirm” their children.

On this Transgender Day of Visibility, the President called on all Americans to “lift up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our Nation and to work toward eliminating violence and discrimination against all transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary people.”
