California is one of many states to make headlines for declaring that they intend to give black people reparations for previous discrimination and slavery.

They put a price tag on the reparations of $5 million per resident, but people are furious over this dollar amount. They said it’s not enough.

According to Fox News, “The demands were made at an in-person meeting of the California Reparations Task Force, created by state legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020. The committee heard comments from the public as it considers final recommendations to submit to the California Legislature, which will decide whether to implement the measures and send them to Newsom’s desk to be signed into law.”

The task force has considered a much smaller amount of roughly $360,000 per person. However, that still puts the price tag at around $640 billion.

On the local level, San Francisco is looking at its reparations for people. One proposal entertains the idea of giving each person $5 million. According to research on the concept, it would cost residents that aren’t black about $600,000. However, speakers that voiced their opinions wanted more than $5 million.

Fox News reports, “‘I believe that 5 million in reparations is too little for the work that foundational Black Americans have done for this country and other countries,’ one speaker said. ‘I believe that 7.6 million [dollars] is a number that can be used very wisely in our foundational Black American communities.’”

That dollar amount isn’t all that’s being requested. The speaker also called for more reparations, such as an agreement not to increase tuition for black Americans and for them to be given land. He called the current proposal another form of slavery and preposterous.

Another speaker against the proposal said that the dollar amount wasn’t enough because it was 50 years ago, and that’s only $100,000 per year. This speaker followed up by asking where the money is at.

Many people ask that question, but it’s not because they want to see it passed out. It’s because they’re wondering where the money will come from. San Francisco can’t afford even $5 million in reparations. The state of California already has predicted a massive budget deficit that’s just over $22 billion. They can’t even afford reparations.
