National Geography has sponsored an event called the Geography Bee for decades now.

The last one was seen in 2019, before the pandemic. Then, it was canceled due to COVID. Now, it won’t be returning, thanks to equity.

During the pandemic, NSG members said it was nice to pause. The members stated that it gave them plenty of time to reimagine what education in geography looks like, complete with a curriculum allowing more students to learn about geography.

However, it has yet to return. Now, they are saying that it’s been canceled. According to The Blaze, “Critics of the bee’s cancellation suggest that the move may have been racially or ethnically motivated, as young males of Asian descent seemed to dominate the competition for over a decade. National Geographic’s new emphasis on helping students ‘more equitably participate’ has only fueled such claims.”

Not only is the GeoBee not coming back, but it also seems that National Geographic needs to change its tune. Instead of encouraging friendly competition, now the focus is on encouraging activism. National Geographic says that they want to promote a generation of people who can find solutions to problems, such as racial injustice and global issues, to help protect the world.

As more traditions we love are canceled in favor of woke culture and activism, you can’t help but wonder how this will turn out. No one is for racial injustice. We’ve all seen it in our lives, and very few people want to see racism plaguing society or hurting people.

However, there comes the point where you must question whether equity is a good thing. For example, let’s look at a story previously reported on Blabber.buzz that involves San Francisco paying reparations. No one disagrees that black people should get reparations. However, is it fair that non-black people will be out $600,000 even if their families did not own slaves? Somewhere in this, there has to be a balance—a way to fight racial injustice without going fully woke and hurting others in the process.
