There are renewed concerns related to China’s path to building its military and creating the kind of fighting force that could come to dominate the world.

Fox News reports that General Milley is highly concerned about China’s path regarding its efforts to build its military.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley testified about all of this on Wednesday. He suggested that China is on a “disturbing path” to become the dominant military force in the world by mid-century if they stay on the path they are on right now. He suggests they have the means and resources to pull this off if they continue to build up their power and gain resources.

This request is part of the 2024 budget presented to Congress, asking for increased military spending. The Department of Defense is taking the position that the United States must continue to “outpace” China regarding the build-up of our military and the ability to keep ourselves protected against the influence of outside forces.

Milley said, “They have a national goal to be a global - to be [the] global - coequal with the United States and superior militarily by mid-century,” and “They’re on that path to do that, and that’s [really] disturbing. That’s bothersome.”

He added, “We’re going to have to not only keep pace, but we have to outpace that, [and that] will assure the peace.”

The intelligence agencies in the United States determined that China is accelerating its moves to increase its military power, possibly to confront the United States in a prolonged and challenging conflict.

Milley also offered warnings about China’s nuclear capabilities. Those capabilities continue to grow, becoming a concerning issue for many in the military-industrial complex and beyond.

He went on to say:

“We are probably not going to be able to do anything to stop slow down, disrupt, interdict or destroy the Chinese nuclear development program that they have projected out over the next 10 to 20 years,” and “They’re going to do that following their [own] plan.”

He continued this thought by saying, “And there’s very little leverage, I think, that we could do externally to prevent that from happening.”

If accurately projected, this will significantly impact China-US relations moving forward. It is something to continue to keep an eye on.
