The death toll tragically continues to rise in Mississippi after a devastating tornado ripped through the area.

So far, the Hill reports that 23 people have perished due to this tornado, but that number continues to climb as crews search through rubble and destruction.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency tweeted that it could confirm the 23 deaths so far, but they also reported that there are 4 people still missing and dozens injured. All of those numbers could rise significantly over the days. The same agency tweeted that those numbers are “likely” to grow.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported a tornado struck approximately 60 miles northwest of Jackson, Mississippi. It went through rural towns such as Rolling Fork and Silver City with a force of roughly 70 miles per hour.

The NWS had alerted residents to tell them they needed to “take cover now” to protect their lives. The alert also said that the tornado would destroy the mobile homes in the area.

On Friday, Gov. Tate Reeves (R) tweeted that the state activated medical support to increase the number of emergency medical personnel available in the area. He also said he would travel to Sharkey County to visit with some of the first people impacted by this tragic situation. He stated that he would be there to help where he could and to pray with others for the safety of all Mississippi residents.

Reeves said, “The loss [will be] felt in these towns forever.”

Rolling Fork Mayor Eldridge Walker told CNN that his city was utterly gone but that the people there are resilient and will fight to return to everyday lives. These words truly impact the people struggling to get by in the area now. It is the kind of thing that they need to hear now.
