Representative Bob Good has again pushed for new legislation to make English the official language of the United States.

Fox News reports this is not the first time Rep. Good has tried to push this issue. The GOP members of the House tried to take up the issue during the last Congress. However, they could not get anywhere with it as Democrats controlled the House then. Representative Good of Virginia introduced the English Language Unity Act. This Act would “declare English as the official language of the United States.”.

Fox News reports that this Act would require that all official government meetings be held in English and that all immigrants would need to acknowledge their responsibilities as citizens in English before they were granted citizenship.

Federal officials insist that following through on this would help make the use of the English language unifying across the spectrum. They insist that having an official common language like this is a good thing and that those who oppose it only do so because they don’t understand the full scope of what it means to have an official language like this.

Rep. Good spoke with Fox News Digital about his proposal and said:

“We live in one of very few countries that does not have an official language,” and “In the melting pot of America, our common English language promotes unity and fosters cultural integration. The English Language Unity Act is a common-sense measure that will help make America a stronger nation and cut our total federal spending.”

This legislation comes as numerous meetings and other government functions have been held in languages other than English. While some say this is nothing more than an attempt to accommodate the needs of those who speak other languages, some fear it is diluting the English language.

One example of a situation in which the government is going out of its way to produce materials in other languages includes the Environmental Protection Agency, which puts out press releases in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog, Korean, Russian, Haitian, Portuguese and two variations of Chinese.

This goes too far as the agency is meant to represent the American government. Still, they are doing everything in their power to include materials in languages far beyond the most commonly spoken language in the country. That is clearly of concern to a significant number of people.
