After the train accident in East Palestine, Ohio, train accidents have dominated the news, and this is another one. This accident happened in Washington State and spilled over 3,000 tons of diesel fuel.
Per Fox News, “Devices called “derailers” sit on both sides of the bridge, embedded in the railroad tracks, to force trains off the tracks when the bridge is open, KUOW reported.”
The bridge was ready for the train to cross. However, a derailleur was still operating even though it didn’t need to be. Two cars entered the dirt when the train’s wheels slammed into the device. This was next to a casino and RV park.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there was a miscommunication between the bridge tender and the train crew. However, they also stated that they needed to follow the proper procedures.

Fox News says, “Human error and poor track conditions are the leading causes of rail accidents in the United States, according to Federal Railroad Administration data.”
This accident is located on a tribal reservation. An official from the Federal Railroad Administration will monitor the cleanup but will not conduct a full investigation. A spokesperson for the administration said that it didn’t meet the requirements for an investigation because there were no injuries, fires, or explosions.

So far, they are moving out contaminating soil and pumping out contaminated groundwater. The company is footing the bill. The company, BSNF, doesn’t know when the tracks were last inspected.

Tom Wooten is a spokesperson for the Swinomish Reservation. He said he is thankful no one was injured, and preserving the land is paramount. According to komonews.com, part of his statement says, “This spill, while it may not be considered large through an environmental lens, signals a larger infrastructure issue as this is happening more frequently across the country. Our top priority should be evaluating the maintenance of our infrastructure while hauling hazardous materials, continuing to wean away from fossil fuels, and preserving our native lands.”
Mr. Wooten is correct. There needs to be more focus on maintaining tracks and taking steps to ensure this is not an ongoing problem.
