The Florida State Board of Education is set to vote on a proposed rule amendment that would extend a ban against teaching about gender identity and sexual orientation in prekindergarten through third grade in the Sunshine State.

The current law prohibits such instruction in kindergarten through third grade, while the new proposal would expand the ban to encompass prekindergarten through eighth grade as well as fourth grade through twelve with an exception, "unless such instruction is either expressly required by state academic standards ... or is part of a reproductive health course or health lesson for which a student’s parent has the option to have his or her student not attend."

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the vote is scheduled for April 19. If enacted, the rule amendment would have implications beyond the classroom.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has yet to declare his intention to run in 2024, has suggested he could defeat President Joe Biden. Trump, however, has derisively referred to DeSantis as an "average Governor" and declared that the GOP does not want him as their President.

The proposed rule amendment is likely to be contentious in the upcoming vote. According to the law passed in 2022, “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

The amendment is expected to garner both opposition and support from those who believe that such topics should or should not be taught in schools.
