The statement begins by saying that the University acknowledges that systematic racism hurts various groups and that everyone is worse off because of it. Then, The Daily Caller continues by saying, “‘We are aware that we are complicit in systems of oppression through our individual and collective actions. We reject white supremacy and its ideologies of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism. We uphold social justice in our lives and work as teachers and scholars. We embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion.’” Read the full removed statement below.

Adam Ellwanger, an English professor, says that it was more than likely removed because of public opinion but stated that he doesn’t know why it was. In his brief opinion piece, he criticizes the statement and the use of the word we. He says that the term implies that the entire faculty feels the same way and that he does not.

He also questioned how those views would impact him later. Per The Daily Caller, he wrote, “Given that the department has now stated openly that the promotion of these values should be manifested in ‘our work as teachers and scholars,’ how might this affect my annual evaluation scores in the categories of teaching and scholarship?”

Ellwanger says that the anti-racism speech is equivalent to radical leftist agenda and that they are pushing this on everyone. He points out that it’s packed with demonization and racial favoritism.

Texas Universities aren’t just coming under fire from professors, though. The Chief of Staff for the governor’s office sent a memo to inform universities that using DEI requirements for hiring is illegal and that schools are not permitted to use any taxpayer money for DEI activities. This may be why the University needed to take the statement down. Other schools are reviewing their DEI policies, thanks to the memo.

“We, the English Department, acknowledge that systemic racism harms Black and African-descendant, Indigenous, Latin American, Latinx and Latin, Asian, Asian-American, American Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, and multi-racial persons, and we are all the worse because of it,” the statement read. “We are aware that we are complicit in systems of oppression through our individual and collective actions.
