Noting the significance of Avi Kwa Ame in particular, Biden highlighted its status as a part of the creation story of several tribal nations and its Joshua tree forest, desert bighorn sheep, desert tortoise, and Gila monster. He also spoke of Castner Range, a training and testing site for the Army during the World Wars and Vietnam War, and is home to the Mexican Poppy flower. The monument will include 6,672 acres of the Franklin Mountain range.
However, Biden's remarks weren't without their awkward moments. When attempting to pronounce Avi Kwa Ame, he admitted, "I'm having trouble." This unfortunate slip of the tongue only highlighted the President's lack of knowledge about the national monument he was announcing.
As reported by The Hill, Biden's announcement marks an important step in protecting these areas and their diverse natural features. Establishing these two national monuments will ensure their preservation for future generations.
