Alex Murdaugh is in prison for the murder of his wife and son.

However, now people are looking into what he and his lawyer were thinking, thanks to a leaked phone call. A jail in South Carolina released the recorded phone call by accident, which wound up on a true crime podcast. Now, his lawyer is furious.

Jim Griffin, the attorney, admits it was his voice on the recording and says he’s mad as hell. He questioned who else was listening to that phone call and pointed out that they were talking about a strategy for trial. Fox News reports that the hidden True Crime podcast released the recording of Griffin talking to Murdaugh while incarcerated at the Colleton County jail during his explosive six-week double murder trial.

Griffin said he is looking into the incident to determine what happened and how the phone call leaked. He said he had sent inquiries about the incident to the sheriff and jail. However, neither responded to him. According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, the podcast got the recorded phone call thanks to a public records request.

Conversations between an attorney and his client are supposed to be private. Unfortunately, this one fell through the cracks. According to Fox News, the sheriff’s office stated, “The release of the attorney-client call was an inadvertent human error. All jail calls had to be screened by listening to the first few seconds of each call to determine if they fell under attorney-client privilege. Multiple calls were removed, but this one call inadvertently remained in the list for release.’”

The sheriff’s office says they asked Hidden True Crime not to publish it. Hidden True Crime stated on social media they didn’t receive the notice until after the phone call was published.

Daniel Bibb, former Manhattan prosecutor and now a defense lawyer, told Fox News Digital, “This is a very big deal. The jail should know better. This is a violation of attorney-client privilege, but since it was released after the trial ended, it didn’t prejudice the jury and won’t affect the convictions.”

Fox News reports that a notice of appeal has been filed.
