Iowa Republicans have recently been accused of pursuing an agenda that includes a costly school choice bill and legislation targeting the LGBTQ community.

In a hit piece published Monday, The Washington Post referred to Iowa as the "Florida of the North without the beaches” due to these policies. Statehouse reporters have derided this remark.

Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, has been profiled in the article as a "culture warrior," with her policies on gun rights, school choice, and abortion access receiving particular attention. The Post argued a connection drawn between the "Don't say gay" protestors in Iowa and Florida.

Leftists have notably called Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill, which became law in March, the "Don't say gay" bill. The law prevents school employees or third parties from giving classroom instruction on "sexual orientation" or "gender identity" for students from kindergarten through the third grade.

The Washington Post report also highlighted the "three bills related to gay and transgender rights" passed by Iowa lawmakers, with the measure to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth awaiting Reynolds' signature. Keenan Crow, the director of policy and advocacy for One Iowa Action, reportedly told The Post that attacks on the LGBTQ community in Iowa have been "exponentially increasing." He then attributed this to the governor's shifting priorities and suggested that she wanted Iowa to be more like Florida.

Former Indianola mayor Kelly Shaw added his perspective on Reynolds' school choice policies, accusing her of becoming "extreme" and noting that she had "effectively removed her opposition" - an observation he deemed as "extraordinary."

The measure to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth is awaiting Reynolds' signature.
