Marianne Williamson, the best-selling author and spiritual adviser, has been known for preaching love and forgiveness and, since the start of her second Democratic presidential campaign on March 4, made that her agenda.

However, those who have worked with her in the political realm have a different story. Twelve former aides have reported that Williamson subjected them to verbal and emotional abuse, with some claiming she could become physically violent.

According to the aides, Williamson would throw her phone at them, and her outbursts were so loud that hotel staff had to check on her several times. In one instance, the former candidate became so angry about the logistics of a campaign trip to South Carolina that she pounded a car door until her hand swelled. These aides also said that Williamson obsessed over their physical appearance and ridiculed them for being overweight.

When asked about these accusations, Williamson denied that she ever threw a phone at her staff or mocked anyone for their weight. However, she admitted to getting upset and hitting her hand on a car door but said, “a car door is not a person. I would never be physically hurtful to a person.”

Paul Hodes, Williamson’s former New Hampshire state director, confirmed that the reports of her behavior were consistent with his own experience working with her. He added that such behavior was beyond the boundaries of acceptable regardless of gender.

The former aides also said Williamson was difficult to predict and would berate them for seemingly inconsequential things. They added that the candidate required her staff to sign non-disclosure agreements and even suggested monitoring their phones.

“The message was: ‘dont fuck with me because I will make your life a living hell.’ So no one fucked with her.” The aides said they were motivated to come forward now to warn people considering working on her campaign about her treatment of staff.

Williamson has built a career on her message of love and forgiveness, yet those who have worked with her in the political realm paint a picture of a boss who can be verbally and emotionally abusive.
