There is a bizarre story coming out of New Jersey at this time.

It turns out that the city of Newark has an egg on its face after it signed off on a diversity pledge that included a fake nation that does not exist.

The Post Millennial reports that officials from Newark sat down with “delegates” from the “nation” of Kailasa. This was said to be a nation off South America’s coast, but it is not a real country. As Newark officials scrambled to “partner with people from diverse cultures,” they didn’t do their homework to realize that the nation was fake and that the people they met with were not individuals from the country because the country itself does not exist at all.

The New York Post reports that just six days before the ceremony to welcome these delegates, City Hall finally admitted that it had made a mistake and been duped. They also stated that the meeting between their officials and Kailasa was baseless and pointless.

Mayor Ras Baraka spoke during the ceremony and said that he hoped the agreement between Newark and Kailasa “helps to understand cultural, social, and political development and improves the lives of everybody in both places.”

Afterward, a City Hall spokesperson stated, “Although this was a regrettable incident, the city of Newark remains committed to partnering with people from diverse cultures to enrich each other with connectivity, support, and mutual respect.”

The Post Millennial reports that city officials have been mocked by everyone from everyday people on social media to late-night comedians and commentators.

The Daily Show’s Ken Penn said, “Jesus Newark, how can an entire city get catfished?” and “Not a single person realized they’d never heard of this country before? Not on a globe, not at the Olympics? ... There must have been so many red flags, the biggest being that anyone wanted to be sister cities with Newark!”

Fox News’ Jesse Waters pondered why no one stopped to question why no one stopped to ask if this nation even existed or what they were getting involved with. Indeed, quite a few wonder why city officials could have allowed themselves to get such an egg on their faces with something like this.

All of this is an embarrassment for a major city in the United States, and it is something that most believe could have been prevented by someone simply doing even a tiny amount of homework ahead of time.
