Touted as “one of the biggest potential single sources of carbon emissions from wooded parts of Norway,” the moose consume possible carbon storage in trees as they gobble up young saplings and birch in clearcut forests.
A researcher at the university, Xiangping Hu, said, “It was really a surprise to see how much moose can influence vegetation growth, the carbon cycle and the climate system.”
Ecologist Gunnar Austrheim of NTNU University Museum said, “Moose are an ecosystem engineer in the forest ecosystem, and strongly impact everything from the species composition and nutrient availability in the forest.”

The press release continued with Austrheim adding, “A grown animal can eat 50 kilograms of biomass each day during summer.”

According to Alaska Public Media, the moose population is booming, with an increase of 400 times the amount of animals in the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge since the early 1990s. Sebastian Zavoico, a graduate student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, said, “We know that the species are shifting their distribution all over the world.” His ongoing research shows that milder winters and more vegetation factor into the increasing moose population, which would support a climate change theory.

The suggestion? Balance the number of moose and forest management in order to limit CO2 emissions. IndEcol Programme director Francesco Cherubini said, “We don’t only regulate the amount of animals, we very carefully regulate the proportion of females, males, and calves. So there’s a stronger management for moose than for most livestock in Norway.”

Cherubini added that he believes gaining more knowledge of how “these different things are interrelated” will allow the construction of a plan to affect a “win-win solution for climate, for biodiversity and for timber value.”
This isn’t the first time animals have been blamed for carbon emissions. New York Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said “farting cows” caused climate change. She said, “We shouldn’t be itching a hamburger for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”

As an outspoken proponent for the Green New Deal, Ocasio-Cortez published a FAQ page that read, “We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero, emissions in 10 years because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”
