They sound alarm bells saying that the Gen Z people they need to help serve in the military simply aren’t patriotic enough to want to sign up.
Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas spoke with Military.com and said that the Air Force is projecting a 10% shortfall in recruiting this year and that many are concerned about the long-term trends for recruitment for the military branch.
The Air Force Recruiting Service barely met its fiscal year 2022 goal for active-duty members, and they fell short of its Reserve and Guard targets by about 1,500 to 2,000 recruits, according to Air and Space Forces Magazine.

Thomas told Military.com: “This is a very unique generation,” and “Generation Z is not patriotic, in the traditional sense; they’re also less trusting of government... However, Generation Z, these young Americans, still want to have a purpose; they want to be able to make a difference, they want to do something that they feel is really important and meaningful. But we have to become part of that relevant conversation.”

He added: “We’ve got to do a better job of connecting and being relatable because, right now, we are not nearly relatable enough to most of Generation Z,.” This group is characterized as people born between the mid-1990s and 2010.
Fox News also reports that studies performed by the Pentagon show that approximately one-quarter of those of the right age to serve in the military are not physically fit enough to do so. That is also highly concerning for those who make projections about military readiness and other hot topics of concern.
Given all of that, it makes sense that many in the military are highly concerned about the possibility of issues with keeping the military staff with the members that it needs to keep us all protected moving forward.
