Fox News reports a new health study reveals that Millennials are at a crossroads regarding their health. The United Healthcare and Health Action Council conducted the study on people between the ages of 27 and 42 and had a pool of 126,000 individuals.
Fox News reports that the study looked at data from April 2021 through March 2022 compared to historical data from 2012. The findings were presented to the public via the organization’s sixth annual white paper.
Millennials with chronic conditions are “high users” of the healthcare system compared to Generation X.

The study found that there were 106% more hospital admissions by Millennials with diabetes. It also noted a 55% increase in emergency room and urgent care visits for hypertension. Obesity rates are slightly lower among Millennials compared to other generations, but they still have higher ER and urgent care visits than other generations, regardless.

Behavioral disorders were up significantly for Millennials at 35% higher than the generations before them. This list of disorders includes psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and the like.
The most common diagnosis for this age group for psychological differences are ADD and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The cost of healthcare continues to rise for Millennials and everyone else, and one of the most expensive things for this age group is pregnancy. This might account for some of the reasons why many Millennials are delaying having children or not having them at all.

Dr. Mykale Elbe, director of the MSN Nurse Practitioner Program and assistant professor of nursing at Maryville University, spoke with Fox News Digital and stated that she was “not surprised” by the findings. She was not involved in the study, but she feels that it reflects the kind of things that she has seen among the patients she has personally treated in her practice.

Elbe pointed out that Millennials and many younger people are breaking down the stigmas that have long been associated with mental health disorders. Therefore, this could be part of why rates of mental health disorders have been diagnosed at higher rates for this age group compared to others. Regardless, there are still many concerning things that have come out of this study, and some wonder what it means for the healthcare future of this age group.
