President Biden has accused "MAGA Republicans" of wanting to defund the police and FBI, thereby flipping the GOP's allegations that the Democrats were the anti-police party.

During an event at the Finishing Trades Institute in Philadelphia on Thursday, the President stated, "MAGA Republicans are calling for defunding the police department and defunding the FBI now. That's a good one. I like that." This comment comes in response to a growing campaign by some Republicans to defund the FBI following its search warrant execution at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home.

President Biden, who has previously stated that he does not intend to strip police departments of funding, has included in his budget proposal the hiring of 100,000 more police on the streets, as well as allocating funds for crime prevention strategies and community violence intervention.

He emphasized the importance of investing in public safety and providing additional support to law enforcement when they are expected to perform various roles. Biden explained, "We expect our cops to be social workers, psychologists, and mental health counselors. You know, more cops are killed responding to domestic violence calls than anything else."

The "defund the police" slogan became a rallying cry among progressive Democrats during the summer of 2020, as they called for police reform following George Floyd's death. However, Democrats have now turned the tables and accuse Republicans of being anti-police, particularly after they failed to support a Jan. 6 independent commission and opposition to allocating $1.9 billion to boost Capitol security and fund police officers following the Jan. 6 riots.

Republican opposition to the FBI has intensified, with some party members calling for its defunding and destruction after its search warrant execution at Mar-a-Lago. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., tweeted, "Defund the FBI," and Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., called to "destroy the FBI" in a tweet.

President Biden's budget proposal, unveiled on Thursday, includes a range of tax hikes on corporations and high-income individuals, totaling more than $4.5 trillion in tax increases. However, with a deeply divided Congress and Republican control of the House, the proposals are unlikely to receive support and are expected to be rejected.
