Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee gave a simple but straightforward solution for what to do to work on bringing crime rates down.

Fox News reports that he stated that we are all out to keep violent people in jail for longer simply.

Contee was speaking with Mayor Muriel Bowser at Mayoral Public Safety Media Availability when he gave this simple but true recommendation about what to do. He then responded to a reporter’s question about how to address rising homicide rates in the city. Contee said: “What we got to do, if we really want to see homicides go down, is keep bad guys with guns in jail. Because when they're in jail, they can’t be in communities shooting people. So when people talk about what we gonna do different, or what we should do differently, what we need to do different, that’s the thing that we need to do different.”

The chief continued: “We need to keep violent people in jail. Right now, the average homicide suspect has been arrested eleven times prior to them committing a homicide,” and “That is a problem. That is a problem.”

Repeat criminal offenders are a major problem in the nation’s capital. Even last month, Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., called out DC city officials for not doing more to curtail the problem. She had a good reason to bring this up. Representative Craig was assaulted by a homeless person in her DC apartment.

Representative Craig said: “I got attacked by someone who the District of Columbia has not prosecuted fully over the course of almost a decade, through 12 assaults before mine that morning,” and “I mean, it wasn’t even in every instance that he got 10 days or 30 days. The charges were often completely dropped before any justice was achieved at all.”

There are a lot of concerns about crime in DC right now. Fox News reports that DC hit more than 200 murders in two consecutive years for the first time since 2003. This shows the rising crime problem in DC in raw data and statistics that are accessible to all.

Therefore, DC officials must be held accountable for their failure to address the issues related to crime in the city. Recently, DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson had to pull a crime bill that the U.S. House rejected for being far too soft on crime. Even President Biden said he would not veto the House’s decision.
