A non-profit voter registration organization in Georgia, co-founded by former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, has called for a "National Day of Action Against Police Terror," scheduled for March 9.

The announcement came just days after far-left extremists set fire to construction equipment and attacked police officers at a future police training facility in Atlanta, Georgia, nicknamed "Cop City."

The New Georgia Project, Abrams' non-profit, tweeted about the march, saying, "NGPAF activists and partners will be in Atlanta marching to #StopCopCity as part of the National Day of Action Against Police Terror." The flyer featured the organization's logo alongside other radical activist groups. The accompanying flyer stated, "Demand justice for Tyre Nichols and Tortuguita."

Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old African American, reportedly succumbed to his injuries after being beaten by five former Memphis Police Department officers, the incident being captured on bodycam.

The future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center has been occupied by Antifa and other far-left extremists since June 2021 to prevent the construction of what they call a "cop city." In January, law enforcement agencies raided the so-called autonomous zone, during which a Georgia State Patrol trooper was shot and severely injured allegedly by 26-year-old Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, one of the campers in the area. Officers returned fire and killed the gunman.

After the shooting, Antifa members responded to the Atlanta Police Foundation with violent protests. This was spurred by a tweet from the now-suspended Atlanta Forest Twitter account, which called for a "night of rage" in response to the shooting. The protests included throwing rocks and lighting fires.

Fox News reported that The New Georgia Project received almost $500,000 in COVID-19 bailout money during a year its donations grew by tens of millions. Additionally, the organization reported that it paid $0 in payroll taxes. In August 2022, the state's ethics commission ruled that the nonprofit likely bypassed financial disclosure laws by not reporting millions in election-related spending, including advocating for Abrams during her failed 2018 gubernatorial run.

While the New Georgia Project's donors remain undisclosed, the Marguerite Casey Foundation, another Abrams-affiliated nonprofit, reported two grants totaling $100,000 as part of a multi-million voting rights funding effort in 2020. Fox News also declared that Abrams became a member of the Marguerite Casey Foundation's board of directors in 2021, and supported a push to amplify anti-police funding from the foundation. The President of the foundation, Carmen Rojas, has frequently advocated for defunding and eliminating police forces.

The National Day of Action Against Police Terror has sparked concern among conservative groups who see it as yet another attempt to undermine law and order in the country. It remains to be seen what impact the event will have on public opinion and policy regarding police reform.
