Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has a few opinions about recent legislation proposed by Republicans in Florida.

According to reporting by the Washington Examiner, Gingrich is not happy with the proposed legislation.

Reportedly, Gingrich had stated that Florida Republicans should pull a bill they had previously proposed that would require bloggers in Florida to pre-register with the state before they became critical of the government in Florida. The legislation would cover top officials in the state, including Governor Ron DeSantis. In other words, if passed, the legislation would require critics of the state government to get a license to criticize the government.

State Sen. Jason Brodeur, a Republican, has proposed the bill. It would also require bloggers to disclose where they receive their funding before continuing operations in Florida. Gingrich said the bill was “insane” and asked Brodeur to pull the proposed legislation.

Gingrich tweeted:

“The idea that bloggers criticizing a politician should register with the government is insane. It is an embarrassment that it is a Republican state legislator in Florida who introduced a bill to that effect. He should withdraw it immediately.”

The proposed legislation triggered many in the media to have a firestorm of criticism of the bill. In particular, Democrats seemed to aim for the legislation and appeared almost giddy about the idea that Republicans might have overstepped on this specific proposed legislation. However, it is also true that some critics have come from other corners. Some Republicans are also speaking out against this legislation in many ways.

Gingrich spoke with Florida Politics and stated: “Paid bloggers are lobbyists who write instead of talk. They both are professional electioneers. If lobbyists have to register and report, why shouldn’t paid bloggers.”

The legislation would impose fines of $25 per day with a maximum penalty of $2,500 for failing to register with the state government.

The Washington Examiner reports that blogs are “a website or webpage that hosts any bloggers and is frequently updated with opinion, commentary, or business content” in the legislation. This is a comprehensive definition, pointing to the idea that many different types of paid media could fall under the umbrella of content targeted by this type of legislation.
