A Chinese Cultural Revolution survivor, Xi Van Fleet, is raising concerns about Critical Race Theory and other attempts to rewrite U.

S. history.

Van Fleet, who fled China and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 26, believes that narratives suggesting racism means the U.S. offers no hope for non-white people are historically inaccurate and threaten the country's foundation. She warns that these efforts are reminiscent of the communist takeover of China, where the government rewrote history to control the minds of the youth. "They're doing exactly the same thing," Van Fleet told the Washington Examiner.

"In Mao's China where I grew up ... you can only do things you're told to do. You can only think the way you're allowed to think. Everything is controlled. There's no individual freedom. It is all collectively under one party control. So there's no individual success."

Van Fleet gained renewed attention when she engaged in a Twitter spat with Nikole Hannah-Jones, the creator of the 1619 Project. Hannah-Jones claimed that the presence of Black people in the U.S. is the "greatest rebuke to the narrative of American exceptionalism."

Van Fleet sharply rejected this assertion, contending that the presence of immigrants like herself is "proof of American Exceptionalism."

"Yourself and I, an immigrant from China with 200 borrowed dollars in my pocket when I arrived more than 30 yrs ago, are the proof of American Exceptionalism," Van Fleet said.

She believes that guaranteeing natural rights has been crucial to the U.S.'s success, unlike Maoist China, where there was no individual freedom or success.

Van Fleet, a fellow at 1776 Action, opposes Critical Race Theory and describes it as a form of cultural Marxism that divides people by race and identity. She argues that people need to be taught real history, including the good, bad, and ugly, but that it is important not to stray from the principles that made the country exceptional.

According to Van Fleet, Hannah Jones makes the mistake of focusing too much on race and perpetuating a narrative of perpetual despair for minorities. "Her message is that you have no hope in this country. This country is always going to oppress you — which is absolutely false," Van Fleet said. "We have so many examples right in front of our eyes that people have succeeded."
