Lori Lightfoot, the Democrat Mayor of Chicago, lost her re-election bid on Monday night, following a term marked by soaring crime rates and a strained relationship with law enforcement.

According to the Chicago Police Department, homicides in Chicago reached their highest numbers in 25 years in 2021, surpassing crime-ridden cities like New York City and Los Angeles. Critics attribute this rise in crime to Lightfoot's policies.

Under Lightfoot's leadership, the Chicago Police Department lost many officers amid the surge in crime. Her poor relationship with law enforcement has been criticized throughout her tenure, and the city saw protests calling for her resignation over her handling of the 2020 George Floyd protests.

The mayor faced opposition from eight other candidates in the mayoral race but failed to make the runoff after finishing third. In the April 4 runoff, Chicago Public Schools CEO and city budget director Paul Vallas will face Cook County Board of Commissioners member Brandon Johnson. No candidate managed to garner over 50% of the votes.

The "derelict mayor of Chicago" is what Kayleigh McEnany called Lightfoot in 2020 as the White House press secretary over the lack of ability to control crime in the city of Chicago. Lightfoot answered McEnany, "Hey, Karen. Watch your mouth."
