A Maryland educator reported that intentionally hiding a student's gender switch was mandated by the district's "explicit" policy, which they found to be amusing, Fox News Digital discovered.

According to the school's website, Lane Cogdill is employed at Silver Spring International Middle School in the Montgomery County Public Schools District. The educator uses "ze/zir," "they/them" and "he/him" pronouns when referring to themself.

The educator declared that their remarks regarding a Fox News Digital piece, which featured Cogdill talking about how they divulged to students their numerous nonbinary identities and also kept their gender transformation hidden, were all in accordance with the school district's policy.

Fox News Digital contacted the school district to determine if the claims that teachers were mandated to divulge gender identity to children during initial meetings and conceal students' transitions were part of official policy but did not get an answer.

"Not a soul at my district or my school had brought it up because, as it turns out… everything I said aligns exactly with explicit district policy," Cogdill said. "It's almost like as a transgender person me and an educator who is highly qualified in my field I know what I'm talking about. So I had some good laughs with friends and colleagues about it, and I carried on with my terrifying, clear agenda of teaching middle school every day."

According to Cogdill, if a student inquires about their gender, the educator will ask about their name and pronouns and, if asked, will try to keep the information from school officials and parents.

The teacher continued, "I can't imagine breaking a single trans or non-binary student's trust by sharing details about their gender identity with anyone… especially their parents, their counselors and their administrators."

In order to express their gender identity, transgender kids may "social transition" by selecting new names and pronouns that are more in line with the gender they associate with. This process can also include wearing clothes and getting haircuts that reflect their desired gender expression.

Cogdill commented that a lot of trans and non-binary students had experienced a boost in self-assurance after they shared their thoughts with them, and when they had a grown-up they trusted to back them up.

At the start of each year for the past seven years, Cogdill has taken the opportunity to acquaint new students with his identity by providing an explanation.

The teacher mentioned that they identify as non-binary, which is not identifying as either a man or a woman. They also stated that they consider themselves to be genderfluid and genderqueer since they identify as having both masculine and feminine qualities.

"I identify as non-binary, meaning I don't identify as a man or a woman. I identify with the terms genderfluid and genderqueer because I'm somewhat masculine and somewhat feminine," the teacher said.

"The pronouns they mostly affirm me are ze/zir or they/them or he/him. My title is Mx. Cogdill – Mx. – rather than Ms. or Mr., And I ask my students… to use Mx. instead of ma'am or sir. I changed my name to Lane because it's gender-neutral. I also go by Theo, which is affirming because my masculinity is not always recognized by other people."
