They talk for hours before you finally realize who it is, leading to most people avoiding those phone numbers they don’t know. A new bill in New Jersey will require telemarketers to give out their names and phone number.
Fox News states, “You’ve got to read the bill introduced by Republican state Sen. Jon Bramnick, which would require telemarketers ‘to provide the customer the name and telephone number of the person on whose behalf the call is being made.’” Not only do they have to release that information, but they must say it within the first thirty seconds of the phone call.
The bill has been dubbed the Seinfield Bill after a scene in the 90s sitcom Seinfeld. During the scene, Jerry answers the phone, and it’s a telemarketer. He says he’s busy and asks the telemarketer for their phone number. The telemarketer states they can’t do that, and Jerry points out that they don’t want people calling them at home. When the person on the phone says they don’t, Jerry responds, “Now you know how I feel,” before hanging up on them.

Bramnick enjoys doing stand-up comedy and showed the scene from Seinfeld when he discussed his bill. He says that he wants to see telemarketers being more transparent. People that answer the phone should know who they are talking to and what they are trying to sell them.

The new law would also require more transparency on websites, such as including the address of the business. The New Jersey Senate agrees with Bramnick. The five Senators all voted to make the bill into law. If it becomes a law, households will enjoy being able to answer the phone and almost instantly know whether they want to stay on the phone. This can also result in fewer spam calls in general.
