In a heated exchange between Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California and Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas Tuesday, Waters denied being a socialist despite Roy’s reminder of comments she made 15 years ago that threatened a government takeover of oil companies.

The discussion began when Roy mentioned a speech Waters had made in the House of Representatives in 2008, where she stated that she “would be all for the government taking over, and running [oil] companies, if that’s what it takes.”

“The representative from California seems to want to label me a socialist and no one else here,” Roy said. “I don’t need lectures from the representative from California about being called names.”

This led to Waters’ denial of being a socialist, but the Daily Caller points out that “Waters’ comments were made in specific response to the government’s attempts to sue the oil companies” and “her calls for a government takeover of oil companies fall into the category of socialism.”

The heated argument continued, with Roy accusing the Democrats of “trying to label people” and Waters retorting, “You started it.”

The situation escalated further when Roy mentioned that Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders “calls himself a socialist,” prompting Waters to exclaim, “He’s not a Democrat!”

The argument ended with Waters reiterating her stance that she “condemn[s] any kind of socialism” and Roy simply asking, “How about the comments from 2008?”

This exchange serves as an interesting example of the ongoing debate between Democrats and Republicans over the role of government in the economy. With the 2024 presidential election looming, this issue is sure to remain a central topic of discussion in the months to come.
