A person stole the car. Usually, when a car is stolen, you would blame the thief. However, this DA insists that it is the car manufacturer’s fault. Now, they’ve filed a suit to prove their case. Ann Davison, Seattle City Attorney, is suing Kia and Hyundai because she blames them for car thefts in Seattle and surrounding areas. According to the suit, car manufacturers did not put anti-theft systems in their cars. Over the past couple of years, thefts of the two brands of cars have drastically increased. According to Just The News, “In the last two years, thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars increased by 363% and 503% in Seattle, according to the lawsuit. The Seattle Police Department reported a 620% increase in reports of stolen Hyundais and Kias in July 2022 over the previous July.” [tweet_embed]January 28, 2023[/tweet_embed] Davison points out that the car manufacturers know this is a public safety concern, yet they don’t do anything about it. She says they should take extra steps to protect people, such as installing anti-theft systems in vehicles. On top of that, Davison says that police have to work more to deal with the drastic increase in theft, resulting in taxpayers having to pay for the problem. Kia has deemed the lawsuit unnecessary. They’ve already stated that they are concerned that thieves are targeting their cars more, and they’ve taken steps to help prevent theft. All new vehicles that are being produced will have engine immobilizers. Kia has taken steps to provide wheel locks to police departments for distribution. Customers can pick up these locks for steering wheels to prevent theft for free. Beyond saying that the lawsuit is unnecessary, Kia has not released a comment on the current suit. However, it seems like the manufacturer is already doing more than they are required to so that they can help customers.
