The House Judiciary Committee, now led by Republicans, will open hearings into the ongoing immigration crisis at the border.

The Washington Examiner states that the committee will begin the first hearings on a two-year-long crisis unfolding at the border during the Biden Administration. It is something that the Administration has seemingly just wanted to ignore and pretend isn't happening. However, those suffering from the consequences of the border crisis every day are feeling it very acutely.

Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), the former head of the Freedom Caucus, announced that the first hearings on the immigration crisis would take place starting on February 1, 2023.

These hearings are serious because there are calls within the GOP to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. There are other committees that impeachment articles would have to move through if this were the route to be taken. It seems likely that this will be the case.

Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced last week, according to the Washington Examiner, that the House Committee on Oversight and Reform would bring top agents from the U.S. Border Patrol to testify about the crisis at the border. In particular, the committee would like to know about what it was like for border agents to do their work during the coronavirus pandemic. The committee feels that this was likely one of the most challenging times in the agency's history, and it would like to know more about what it was like to work through those times.

The Washington Examiner reports that more than 5.2 million non-citizens have encountered federal law enforcement while attempting to enter the country without authorization in just the two years since Joe Biden was sworn in as President.

This figure includes everyone that has sought asylum at ports of entry. The process of seeking asylum was suspended for three years during the pandemic, but that often led people to walk around the port and enter the country illegally. However you chop it up, it is the case that many people are attempting to enter the country illegally. It is also true that many are getting into the country far more quickly than they might have otherwise.

Given all of this, it is essential to ensure everyone understands the full scale of the crisis at the border. The bottom line is that it is a crisis that House Republicans are taking a serious look at.
