Reed has an abrasive personality on the golf course, which is part of what he has built his name and reputation on. However, he is now getting some attention for the $450 million defamation lawsuit he has lodged against CNN.
Numerous media outlets, including Golf Monthly and Mediaite, have reported that Reed and his team of lawyers have sought damages from CNN for “damages which they have caused.”
The damage that Reed is arguing has been caused to him is related to the words that CNN host Jake Tapper spoke while doing a segment in which the news network allegedly made it seem like LIV Golf might be a threat to the business of the PGA. Reed and his legal team suggest that the network went out of its way to make it seem like the Saudi-backed LIV Golf was trying to steal the thunder of the PGA. That is something other than what they believe is a fair characterization of LIV Golf’s work.

Golf Monthly obtained legal documents in this case that read:
“Late last week, CNN and Jake Tapper, along with CNN’s sports reporter Bob Costas, aired a highly defamatory piece titled, ‘The Court Fight Between PGA Tour and LIV Golf Escalates as the Saudi-backed LIV Tries to Avoid Handing Over Information.’”

The legal documents continued by saying:
“This widely viewed broadcast in Florida, the nation, and internationally was not only defamatory but also designed to incite ridicule, hatred, and violence against LIV Golf players, such as my client Patrick Reed, a world champion professional golfer, by publishing that he takes ‘blood money’ from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy twenty-two (22) years ago.”

It continued by saying:
“The article also, at a minimum, falsely implies that he is using a lawsuit, of which he is not even a party, to dig up data, track down, intimidate and harass 9/11 victims' families. The broadcast republishes, with reckless disregard for the truth, a prior Bloomberg article, and references the Bloomberg article in the broadcast.”
It is still being determined if Reed will accomplish what he is going for with this pursuit of CNN, but at least he is standing up for what he believes in.
