Republican George Santos of New York denies allegations that he set up a fake charity to dupe veterans out of their money.

The scheme he is being accused of setting up was supposed to help raise money for veterans needing help with their dog’s cancer treatments.

Fox News reported that “U.S. Navy veteran Richard Osthoff told Patch.com that he came into contact with an animal charity called ‘Friends of Pets United’ after he learned it would cost $3,000 for surgery for his service dog, a pit bull mix named Sapphire who had developed a life-threatening stomach tumor.”

Osthoff was told by the vet that there was a charity that could help with the expenses of the cancer treatment. But he alleges that Santos took the money from the charity and ran away with it.

The story continues as Fox News reports that “Santos allegedly claimed the dog’s disease was untreatable after consulting with an affiliated veterinarian and that the money would go to his charity instead. Osthoff had urged to allow him to take the funds to other clinics, and Santos allegedly stopped responding.”

The aging veteran claims that the dog finally passed away and that he had to beg for money to dispose of the dog. But to blame another person for not receiving funds seems fishy at best.

Fox News also revealed that “A ‘Friends of Pets United’ charity Santos said he founded was not listed as a charity in official records, according to The New York Times, which also reported that the beneficiary of a 2017 fundraiser linked to the group said they did not receive the money.”

This accusation rides on the eve of the claim that Santos lied about his background while campaigning for his political position. Many Democrats and a few Republicans are demanding that he resign. But Santos has already alluded that it would take his supporters wanting him to resign before he would do so.
