Catholic bishops throughout the United States have condemned the 210 Democrats who voted against the “Born Alive Act” in the House of Representatives. They applauded the fact that the measure ultimately passed, but they were critical of the Democrats that voted against this measure. Fox News reports that the bill is called the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which says that any infant born alive after an attempted abortion is a “legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States.” Doctors must provide care for those infants as “reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive.” The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops put a statement out applauding the passage of this bill. [tweet_embed]January 17, 2023[/tweet_embed] Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington in Texas spoke about the passage of this bill and said: “We commend the House of Representatives for passing legislation to protect innocent children from infanticide and urge the Senate to follow suit.” [tweet_embed]January 17, 2023[/tweet_embed] Burbridge previously sent a letter to the House of Representatives asking that all members vote in favor of the bill. The Catholic Church has remained a strong advocate of the pro-life movement for a very long time, and they continue to advocate for measures that protect the lives of the unborn. Bishop Burbridge stated the following about his position: “Babies who are born alive during the process of an abortion deserve compassionate care and medical attention – just the same as any other newborn baby.” The bill passed by a vote of 220-210 in the House. All 210 “no” votes came from Democrats. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat, voted “yes.” Numerous Catholic figures released press statements questioning why people who voted against the bill would have done so. Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Diocese of Tyler wrote the following: “The moral corruption on display here is devastating for this nation,” and “How can we hope for peace when elected officials have such a blatant disregard for the sanctity of life? To be silent in the face of this evil is to be complicit with this evil. We must say NO!” Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Diocese of Providence in Rhode Island also expressed his views when he wrote: “To members of Congress who voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act — you just voted against giving basic medical care to a struggling newborn child. How heartless, barbaric and cruel. Shame on you.”
