The Blaze reports that the Pentagon has formally retracted its policy of requiring the vaccine at this time. The policy forced nearly 8,400 members of the military out of their service while it was still in place. This angered many, and, understandably, this is the case.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and President Joe Biden wanted to keep the policy in place. Still, Republicans stood their ground and guaranteed that the National Defense Authorization Act would not pass without the removal of the mandate from the language inserted in the bill. Thus, there was a standoff between Republicans and the White House over this bill. Still, it ultimately passed because Republicans could take the mandate out of the funding authorization.

Austin sent a memo saying that the Pentagon “will continue to promote and encourage COVID-19 vaccination for all Service members." Still, they are backing off of the idea of requiring the vaccine as an outright mandate at all times.

The original mandate for the vaccine was detailed in 2019, and the penalty for not getting the vaccine would have been to get kicked out of the service. Now that the vaccine is not going to be required of military members, Austin wrote:

This is incredibly important when it comes to the construction of a military that can work together and complete the missions assigned to it. Obviously, this is hugely important to have a military that can do the missions that it needs to do. This is why many are glad to see that active steps are being taken to ensure our military members are served in their mission and not made to follow unnecessary mandates.
