Students taking the Classic Learning Test (CLT) are subjected to classic texts, “whose writings have had a lasting influence on culture and society,” versus the type of contemporary writing students are tested on when taking the standard SAT or ACT.
Professor Lisa Treleaven of Houston Christian University did an analysis of the outcome of the point breakdown students earned. The CLT allows students to earn a maximum of 120 points. Professor Treleaven noted homeschool students earned roughly 78 points, while private school students earned an average of 7 points. Charter school students received mean scores of 73. The lowest mean scores were made by public school students earning 66 points.

Treleaven wrote, “This is consistent with prior research findings of superior academic performance of homeschool students compared to other school types.” The data used for the analysis of the Classic Learning Test was based on the scores of over 12,000 students between 2016 and 2021.

The connection between leisure and learning is profound. Factory model schooling is antithetical to leisure, but is common for homeschooled students whole are given the time and space to immerse themselves in great literature."

Treleaven noted her study offers a large sample size for the test and because she does not have an “affiliation or compensation from homeschool or educational advocacy groups.” She also noted further research not relying on a self-selected group of students would be beneficial.
