According to Fox News, San Bernardino County, California officials are looking at steps to secede from the state.

Voters in the county approved a measure asking their local officials to study the idea of potentially leaving and forming their state amid rising crime rates in the area. That said, it remains a long-shot idea that San Bernardino County will ultimately separate itself from the rest of the state. Voters might want that to happen, but many legal barriers stand in the way of making this a reality.

This would be the first attempt to add a new state to the union since 1959 when Hawaii was added as the 50th state in this country. The move by San Bernardino County would require the approval of the state of California and the United States Congress. Both of these moves are highly unlikely, so most aren't putting a lot of stock in the idea that San Bernardino County will genuinely become its state at any time.

However, this is just the latest in a long historical string of attempts to break parts of California off from itself. According to Fox News, there have been more than 220 attempts to break off pieces of the Golden State in its 172 history.

None of these attempts have been successful, but San Bernardino County is a 20,000-mile area home to millions of people. Many of those residents are very upset with how California is run. They are seeing a lot more crime and issues than they believe is reasonable for them to deal with.

Some reasons residents in the area believe they would be better off dividing off the state. This is because there is a growing homelessness problem, high taxes, and crime being out of control.

The city of San Bernardino itself filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and has been strapped for cash since then. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Scott Clarkson finally closed the case for the city in September of this year, according to Fox News, after the city showed it could pay its debts and meet the obligations that it had taken on at that time.

That said, it took a lot of difficulties to get San Bernardino to where it is today, and many residents are fed up with it.
