The Canadian Veterans Affairs Office offered a Paralympian and veteran the option to commit suicide after she requested that a wheelchair lift be installed in her home, according to Fox News.

Christine Gauthier is a 52-year-old retired member of the Canadian military who competed in the 2016 Paralympics at Rio De Janeiro. She testified that an official with the Veteran's Affairs office in Canada offered her the option to participate in assisted suicide in a letter from the government organization.

She stated the following before an audience in the House of Commons:

"I have a letter saying that if you're so desperate, madam, we can offer you MAID, medical assistance in dying."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the incident in a public statement this past week. Gauthier said that she had written Trudeau a letter about the issue before.

Fox News reports that Trudeau stated the following on the matter:

"We are following up with investigations and we are changing protocols to ensure what should seem obvious to all of us: that it is not the place of Veterans Affairs Canada, who are supposed to be there to support those people who stepped up to serve their country, to offer them medical assistance in dying."

Canada has permitted medical aid for dying since 2016, and the parameters by which it may be used continue to loosen. They are so lax now that incidents like this can occur.

The Independent reports that the law initially only allowed those facing death to participate in the program. However, it is now open to those with severe physical pain or disabilities.

This story comes just a week after a Canadian fashion company glamorized assisted suicide in a commercial they ran.

La Maison Simons promoted the "beauty" of assisted suicide in a promotional video that they ran on various television stations in Canada. One of the participants in the video says:

"Last breaths are sacred. Even though as I seek help to end my life, with all the pain and in these final moments, there is still so much beauty."

Simons appears to defend the ad, at least in part. The company said that it seeks to: "help people to reconnect to each other and to this hope and optimism."

However, only a few people who hear stories like this find them inspiring or heart-warming. They are disturbing to many people.
