A robbery suspect in Northern California is getting off easy after it was revealed that he would avoid a murder charge.

KTVU-TV reports that the suspect held up the store in Antioch, California. During this event, the suspect killed the gas station clerk, but because he allegedly returned fire, this might be considered self-defense under the law.

James Williams is the name of the employee who worked at Extra Mile mini-mart on Contra Loma Boulevard. Early Saturday morning, two males walked into the store at approximately 2 am with the intent of robbing it, according to the police statements given to KGO-TV.

The robber confronted Williams, but it turned out that Williams also had a gun at the ready. He pulled out his gun and began to chase the suspects, according to the police reports to KBO-TV.

The only thing stolen at the time was some cigar packages. During the chase, the suspects dropped the cigar packages at some point in the pursuit.

KTVU said Williams continued shooting even after hitting Jackson in the leg.

Officers say that Jackson fired back and hit Williams in the chest, which ultimately proved fatal.

At this time, Jackson is NOT being charged with murder, as his actions can be considered self-defense.

Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton stated the charges, in this case, saying that the law indicates that a person cannot pursue another individual to retrieve stolen property after the threat of bodily harm has disappeared.

In her statement to the local television network, she stated the following:

"In the eyes of the law, Mr. Williams' actions ceased to be self-defense when Mr. Williams pursued Mr. Jackson and the other suspect with a firearm and continued to pursue Mr. Jackson after he shot him,"

Annette Matamoroz, the co-worker and girlfriend of Williams, was in the store with him when this incident occurred. She told local reporters the following about Williams:

"[He] just cared about my well-being. He cared about everybody's well-being. They took such a good person away from here. I don't understand why that happened."
