The Clinton Global Initiative handed a $550,000 grant to Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in June 2016.

This was shortly after the religious establishment’s pastor, Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat from Georgia, campaigned for Hilary Clinton when she ran for President.

Warnock’s support for the Democratic Party and Hilary Clinton was evident in 2015 at the Progressive National Baptist Convention. He advocated for the voter registration policies that Clinton favored. He also provided a racially charged statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution when he said Clinton was addressing the concerns of African Americans.

The large grant was meant to improve the energy efficiency of the church through energy audits, the installation of solar power, and other programs. The premise was that the church could show the community about “resource stewardship,” according to Fox News. The grant announcement stated that the church has an active creation care ministry focused on helping people learn how to care for God’s creation.

The issuance of the grant was turned into a racial event when Warnock said climate change impacted “poor, marginalized, black and brown communities” disproportionately compared to other communities. Former President Bill Clinton commended the project by claiming it would provide Atlanta residents with economic and environmental benefits.

Interestingly, this massive grant came on the heels of the Black pastor supporting Hilary Clinton as the Democrat Party’s presidential candidate. Now, Warnock is in a heated battle for one of Georgia’s Senate seats. There was a difference of only around 35,000 votes between the two frontrunners in this race.

The runoff election between Warnock and Herschel Walker, the GOP candidate, will be held in early December. The results of this race will profoundly impact the nation, so it’s one to keep an eye on.
