Early voting has already started in New York, and a surprisingly close Governor's race is taking place in the Empire State.

Democrat Kathy Hochul, who took over after former Governor Cuomo resigned amid a sex scandal (among other issues), is trying to stave off a surge from Republican Lee Zeldin.

The New York Post has now thrown its weight behind Zeldin with an endorsement of the State Representative. The reasons given for the endorsement include the fact that New York has been under one-party (Democrats) rule for too long, that crime and violence in New York are through the roof, and that bad energy policy has sent utility bills through the roof.

Zeldin has promised to tackle these problems and more. He says he will pay particular attention to the problem of New York having some of the highest tax rates in the country. He believes this creates a strain on business growth and development and wants to make New York attractive to businesses again.

According to the latest reporting and data, crime is up 30% year-over-year in New York, and that is not going unnoticed either. Not only do everyday New Yorkers understand that this is a problem, but many are also experiencing it. There are increased rates of violence in the subway system, and crimes in almost every category are up compared to where they were last year. Democrats have not taken decisive action to correct this, and many of their policies only worsen the problem.

During a debate, Governor Hochul went as far as to say that she didn't understand why locking up criminals was a priority. That is a slap in the face to the people she is supposed to represent. They are facing rising crime rates and chaos, but their Governor does not see it as her problem to worry about. There is something wrong with that picture.

If elected governor, Lee Zeldin has pledged to declare a crime emergency in New York. This would grant him extra power and resources to work on the crime issue. That appears to be something that is resonating with many voters throughout the state.

It will be challenging to say what will happen in this race. The state is traditionally a very liberal Democratic state. However, polls have tightened in recent weeks, and it is becoming increasingly possible for Zeldin to pull off the upset if things go well for Republicans on November 8th.
