Mandates to take the vaccine for COVID-19 have proven controversial.

Refusal on the part of adults to be vaccinated, for religious reasons, for fear of side effects, or out of distrust of the medical establishment, has become widespread. Undaunted, the Center for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has voted to add the COVID-19 vaccines that children six months and older must take before school admission. The ruling is an advisory one. Local and state governments still have the power to follow the ACIP’s advice or not.

Some states, such as New York and California, are sure to institute the ruling. The Post Millennial notes that New York is already imposing the requirement.

“New York’s official health website states that parents must ‘show proof of their child’s up-to-date vaccinations,’ unless they have a medical exemption, within 14 days of the first day of K-12 school or daycare. On the same page, it says ‘the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) establishes the recommended vaccine schedule and determines when vaccines are due.’”

Florida and its Governor, Ron DeSantis, are taking a different approach to the ACIP’s recommendations,

“’ As long as I’m kicking and screaming, there will be no COVID shot mandates for your kids,’ said Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis at a Thursday press conference. ‘That is your decision to make as a parent… by and large, most parents in Florida have opted against doing these booster shots, particularly for the young kids.’”

Virginia, governed by Republican Glen Youngkin, added his refusal on behalf of his state’s parents.

“COVID-19 mandates should be in our rear view mirror. The decision to vaccinate a child against COVID-19 is for Virginia parents to make about what’s best for them and their family. We will not adhere to these @CDCgov mandates. In Virginia, parents matter.”

Iowa’s Governor Kim Reynolds also responded negatively.

“The Covid vaccine remains available to those who want it, but it should never be mandated! We passed legislation to prohibit schools, colleges, and daycares from doing so.”

The Western Journal notes that Wyoming, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Mississippi, West Virginia, Montana, Indiana, and Oklahoma also refuse to impose a COVID-19 mandate for school children.

The COVID-19 vaccine mandate has become an issue in Michigan’s governor’s race. Republican challenger Tudor Dixon has indicated that should she be elected, that state would not impose a mandate. In the closing days of the midterm elections, the race has Dixon behind just three points in the RealClearPolitics average.
